First serious snow clearing

The Platinum 30 SHO snow blower is a great tool for clearing snow. We had our first serious snow yesterday and I couldn't wait to get out and see what this 30" SHO could do. It did a great job. The snow was light so throwing it 20-30 feet was no problem. Manoeuvreability was not an issue as it moved around vehicles and corners with minimal effort. It starts easy and runs smoothly.
As far as any cons, I have only found three. The first, it is hard on gas compared to my previous machine. But with a 400+cc engine I'm not surprised. However a bigger tank would be a huge asset. Whereas I used to be able to clear my large yard and driveway on one tank, it now takes two.
Second, when it gets dark the headlight is a great help BUT there needs to be a visor over the top to direct the light forwards. It does but it also shines upwards somewhat so some of the glare is in your eyes. And if you tilt the machine when reversing, it is really in your eyes. Imay end up taping some Duck Tape or a piece of plastic blind over the top to stop this light problem. Shouldn't have to do that as it should not have been an issue when designed. But it is obvious no one thought of that and no one tested the machine when it is dark. Otherwise they would have observed the same problem.
One other small inconvenience, the side to side chute control. It does not work as well as my old gear crank one though it is faster. I find it does not move the full side to side unless you move it to center and then move it quickly full left or right. Only a small thing but inconvenient.
But, other than these three issues, it did a great job. My old 28" took a little longer to do the job but the 30" does it much better. And, where my old machine only threw the snow 10' at most, and 0' - 5' if the snow was wet, the Platinum SHO sends the snow almost back to Old Man Winter. Of course, he'll only send it back so it goes on my neighbour's unused lot.

this unit is very hard to start. if it didn't have a electric start i would never get it started. it keeps stalling at the end of the driveway and then i have to push it back up to the house to plug it in to use the starter to get it running again. the one handle controller for the shoot is always hard to get to work never stays where i want it to put the snow and if i would like it to go 90 degrees to my left or right i need to stop everything grab the shoot pull it to where i want it and wiggle it back and forth to make sure it locks in. i cant get the handle to turn the shoot more than 70 to maybe 80 degrees from straight foreword! if i ever buy another ariens snowblower i will never get this over priced model again!

This machine has been in dealership 4 different times since I bough it in February 2014. The dealership says the issue is fuel related and I say it is not fuel related when I bought a new gas can and used fresh fuel the second time I filled the tank up. The first time I used what fuel came in it from the dealer and it stalled at the end of my driveway and I could not get it started. If there is a fuel issue why isn't my other small engines having the same issue in regards to fuel when I use the same fuel from the same can in all my other small engines like mowers and weed whip? I think this machine and the R&D done on the engine is not correct. Today with all the ethanol fuels being used Ariens should have figure a way to use the different ethanol fuels as all the other manufactures have.

I have used the snow thrower one year. The machine is awesome, but I did have a belt problem. The front belt was not aligned perfectly when I engaged the augur drive, I noticed the engine outside the belt cover was black. Upon removing the cover the front belt was almost completely destroyed in my first use. As I had just purchased the machine I took it back to the dealer and the belt was replaced and adjusted. Still not perfect, because the auger still turns even after disengaging the right controls. I hope there is a maintenance fix or recall for this so the belt alignment can be perfect like the rest of the snow thrower. The Auto Turn is a must have, the ability to turn with like effort even in 10+ inches of snow is irreplaceable. The hand warmers are nice to have when outside long. The Quick turn chute is flawless and the name speaks to how easy it is to use.
Fixing the front belt alignment will make this snow thrower hands down the best overall.

I purchased the Ariens 24 inch Platinum in April 2014. Since the North East has been getting heavy snow falls over the past several years, I felt it was time to retire my 10 year old 22 inch Craftsman snow blower and buy something more suitable. After some research, I liked the advertising that the Ariens products offered. Even before I received the machine I was having trouble. First, the snow blower was delivered damaged and the gas tank had to replaced. Since there was no snow in April, I stored the machine until November 2014. I took it out of storage but it would not start. I had to have it serviced, at my cost when the tech could not start it , and it had not even been used once. Then, January 26, 2015, a major storm. 20" +. Anxious to use the machine, it started on the first pull, ran for five minutes and died. I paid over $1500.00 for the machine and accessories and its back in the shop being serviced (probably at my cost again) after the tech could not start it on site. Based on my experience, I would have to say this product is unreliable.

Comments about Ariens Platinum 24 SHO:

I bought this machine to replace my 42 year old Ariens. The advancement to this new machine is incredible.
So much more power and easy to use. Just cleared 18" of snow from my 100 foot driveway. This machine ate the snow for lunch and didn't blink an eye. The only con I had was with all that engine power 6th gear pops the front end up which would require the accessory weight for the front end. But you still have 5 other speeds which is more than enough.

Comments about Ariens Platinum 24 SHO:

This machine is a snow eating beast!! It seems to say "oh yeah, bring it on". Used it 3 times so far, throws way further than my Cub Cadet 528 ever did. Reverse gears offer good speed selection. Love the hand warmers, I'm 70 years old and hands get pretty cold, but these warmers work so well that I actually have to turn them off after awhile. Auto turn takes a little getting used to but works well. Would highly recommend this machine!

Comments about Ariens Platinum 24 SHO:

This blower is my second Ariens, and love the blower. It works very well and I am now in Season #2 for the machine.

Both last year and this year, my first start of the season was hard to do... and over the winter, if extended time between use, the blow is hard to start. I know how to prime, and I know it can very, very easily flood the engine... this is a bit of what I think the issue is. 1 or 2 extra prime above the "ideal" and the engine will not start easily at all with the pull cord... if the engine is used regularly, I can only assume the fuel line is full and the fuel will flow well to start... but after an extended period this does not appear to be the case. Starting with the power starter was my only option a couple of days ago... after pulling 30 or 40 times I had to stop. My second use of the machine, cold and in cold temp, was a single pull after 2 pushes primer.

In past, even a slightly flooded machine would kick over and sputter (older Tecumseh Snow King engine)... but at least you knew it was working... the current engine design, it appears, does not work. I was at the point of blaming my service department for giving me a dead spark plug before it finally rolled over and started!

Comments about Ariens Platinum 24 SHO:

I did A LOT of research on snow blowers. Like a lot of prospective buyers, I was hesitant to purchase the Ariens with the AutoTurn feature due to some negative reviews. My driveway is concrete and has some raised/uneven areas. My concern was that the Autoturn may wander when hitting these areas. Well I ended up ordering my 2016 Platinum 24 SHO 921050 from my local Ariens dealer (Russo Equipment Frankfort, IL) and I'm really happy with my purchase. Last week we received 6 and a half inches of wet heavy snow so I had the chance to use it. All I can say is WOW! The snow blower handled the snow extremely well. The Autoturn feature worked flawlessly and the large engine threw the snow a great distance. I've read Ariens made a change in the axle location moving it closer to the front. Not sure if that fixed any previous issue with the Autoturn feature but I do know mine worked great. I did buy a new gas can and treated my fuel with stabilizer for use with this snowblower. If you are on the fence with the Ariens and another manufacturer go for the Ariens! PLEASE DON'T REVIEW A SNOWBLOWER ONLINE WITH 5 STARS IF YOU HAVEN'T USED IT IN SNOW!

Outstanding snowblower. Has plenty of power, throws snow way further than cheaper snow blowers, auto turn works great no more levers to mess with. A little loud but that's why it's got so much power, much larger engine on a 24" blower than the competition which equates to great wet heavy snow performance.

Comments about Ariens Platinum Track 28 SHO:

Transmission geared too fast, engine a bit too week to handle more than 4-5 inches of snow, rpm goes down quickly. Fuel tank too small. Unit not properly balanced, way too much weight on the front causing wheels to spin. Light on dashboard blows in your face, blinding the operator during operations in dark condition. Very easy to turn around and start. Handle to direct blower is difficult to reach and not always respond smoothly. I miss my old John Deere 828D.

I purchase an Ariens Platinum 30 with AX414 engine new from Home Depot. Overall the product is awesome. If you are not mechanically able, you will need to hire somebody that is mechanical to setup your new machine. Problems I found and repaired on my new machine: 1) the Primer pump hose rotten, full of cracks and holes and had to be replaced. The chute cables were not adjusted to make the chute function properly and were routed incorrectly, again I repaired. The drive linkage cable and auger linkage cable were not adjusted and the lock nut were not secure, again I repaired. The skid plates/feet were not adjusted to where the scraper blade was the only component touching the ground, I had to adjust and repair, Overall the assembly was very poor. I blame Home Depot for the poor assembly. I blame Ariens for the rotted primer pump hose.

Besides the poor assembly, the machine is a fantastic snow blower after I made the many repairs and adjustments.

I bought a Platinum 30" Snowblower with the Quick Turn Chute & 2nd time I used it, all the gear teeth broke/ stripped off. Ariens gave me a new gear and I installed it but, noted their design on the hex rod / instuctions was faulty with only two cotter pins and the washer supplied was not thick enough to permit proper gear teeth engagement /meshing. The problem is when you rotatate the chute, with a heavy snow load there was not enough preload between the mating gear teeth and they would skip /become disenged and break off the teeth. (My gear had 12 broken gear teeth) I solved this problem by machining a custom bronze washer that was about .150" thicker than the skimpy washer Ariens supplied. I also drilled a new hole thru the hex rod behind the handle bar plate face and added a washer / cotter pin to permantly "fix" the gear teeth spacing so the gears would not "Skip" or break off again.

Cleared more than 100 cubic yards of heavy snow in about 2 hrs following the second largest single day snowfall in our history - 25". Yes I had to pull down the 6' 6" drifts and some of the snow pack to blow it away. It took three tanks of fuel. The snow was distributed a good distance, and did not create extra height at the edges of the driveway. That's important for the next snowfall of 6 - 8" coming tomorrow. The amount of snow to be moved won't be as much, as less will drift in. Get the SHO if you have the room to use it. Always started on the first pull when the directions were followed ;)

Comments about Ariens Platinum 30 SHO:

We purchased the Ariens Platinum 30 SHO as our 1st snow blower, after having endured the historic winter of 2015 here in Massachusetts.

Generally I find the machine to work well, with a few complaints. I saw a few others mention the fuel tank being small - I agree, I did not expect to need to refill the gas tank more than once to clear my driveway... I have a hill which I think is some of the cause of that, as the engine will rev as though it's short on fuel on the hill so I need to keep the gas fairly full. I also find the gas cap to be hard to put back on, especially because of the screen measurement piece.

I find the machine is hard to use when there are imperfections in the pavement. My driveway is older (20 years) so there are some bumps and cracks. The machine wants to jog left and right (or up) when it hits these.

I also find the machine wants to jog left, right, and up when clearing wet snow. It is still quite an arm workout to keep the machine steady in those conditions.

Lastly, the chute control - it works ok if you are just adjusting left or right in a narrow (30-40 degree) turn. If you want it turned at a 90 degree angle it gets stuck and you need to wiggle it to get there. Not ideal.

Overall satisfied in spite of these critiques. It starts on the 1st or 2nd pull most of the time.

Comments about Ariens Platinum 30 SHO:

I think this is a great machine. Runs quiet with plenty of power to handle huge amounts of snow. I've read comments about gravel driveways and across grass areas but I've haven't used mine in that way. Just relatively even pavement. One thing I found initially was the auto-turn would work against me when trying make a long straight pass down the driveway. The least little resistance left or right made the machine turn in that direction. I followed the setup instructions, made some adjustments, and it behaved better. But it still fought me. After thinking about it I thought there may be too much front weight to the snowblower. Its much heavier in the front than any other I had owned previously. So being a mechanical engineer with a machine shop available, I designed and fabricated a custom 20 lb. counterweight to mount under the handle / control area. It made a huge difference. It became so much easier to handle for me and my conditions. Can make a nice straight pass without getting pulled all over the place, still plenty of weight in the front end to keep it from riding up, and makes it much easier to push down on the handles to lift the front when pivoting around 180 degrees to make a return pass. Now, if I was still in my 20's, 220 lbs of muscle, this might not have been necessary, but now being 60 years old, with a tired back, I had to do something. In hindsight, I probably should have bought a smaller machine. Ego may have got the better of me. But if you need a big, strong, well made snowblower, this is it.

Top Notch Quality Snowthrower! I live in Coal Creek Colorado and we get some wild and deep and wet snows. This 30" machine has made the task of clearing the driveway and path to the front door actually enjoyable. I let the machine do the work, and it works per-fectly! Thank you Ariens for the quality of this snowthrower. Only one suggestion, have a manual, quicker method of changing the skid height, as I first use on the concrete and then the rest of the gravel driveway. It would be nice to keep the snowthrower lower on the concrete without having to use a 9/16" socket to loosen and reset two skid bolts on each side before continuing.
