I was able to try out my new Ariens Deluxe 24 this week with the first big snow of the year. Put it to the test with about 8 inches of snow and drifts just under two feet. Machine performance met all my expectations. I read all the reviews and compared with other machines and felt this was the right choice for the long term. Blower never bogged down even with the heavy snow at the end of the driveway. Shoot controls were excellent and I was changing constantly trying to manage good snow placement with high winds. Blower started the same with temps in the teens as it did with temps in the 60's. Great product. Buy an Ariens.

Bought this to replace my 35 year old 8HP 24" Ariens which served me well and could go through anything. Many things have changed from the old design. The new machine has a taller chute which allows you to throw snow further and with better control. It also starts easier and chews through icy plow piles better with the serrated auger.
I stayed with this size unit even though the price is about the same as a 28" unit because I have a narrow driveway with walls on each side and it is a tight fit between the walls and the cars. I have to say I am most disappointed with the units jumpiness and the auto-turn steering. The old gearbox with the manual locking differential was a much better-performing system. I was able to improve on the new system somewhat by adjusting the speed selector as low as it would go without the machine going in reverse instead of first (forward) speed. What this machine really has is two speeds in reverse, one forward for normal to heavy snow and four forward "transport" speeds. Even in this slowest speed, the machine is jumpy and unpredictable. Our asphalt driveway has depressions in spots from the weight of the cars, every time I go over these spots, the machine jerks unpredictably, coming dangerously close to the cars. This was never an issue with my 35 year old model. The "auto-turn" steering may work well if you have a smooth-as-glass driveway, but I find myself constantly fighting against it. The handles have also been moved up about 6 inches to a height that I find awkward to work with. I am average height and the handles cause my hands and forearms to cramp up if I am not finished in less than about 30 minutes.
Overall, the machine is capable, but hard to steer. I suspect it would add hundreds to the price to bring back the old gear-drive differential, but that system's performance was far superior and probably worth the extra money. Generally a fair to good machine, but Ariens can do better.

      Comments about Ariens Deluxe 24:

Live in Maine. We had a nor'easter Sunday and all day Monday. 26" of snow, 50mph winds. Used this machine on my 600ft gravel driveway. Had to clear it multiple times. This morning cut thru 24" drifts, heavy wind packed snow. This machine did it all. This is my 3rd Ariens and my 5th snow blower, nothing beats an Ariens, NOTHING!

I Give the 24" Deluxe 4.5 stars for the following reason. I had the blower in Nov 2016, used it twice and after the second time it was leaking red fluid from the gear box. I got it repaired being under 5 yr warranty. (faulty seals). Had a wintry mix ice, snow and sleet... ran great no issues. Just had a major storm up here in the Northeast (Maine) got over 20 inches 02/17...ran like a champ ran thru everything anad threw it quite a distance...made my day that's for sure....quite pleased....

            Comments about Ariens Deluxe 24:

The Deluxe 28 SHO has nice power and gets through just about anything, but the auto steering is horrible. My driveway has some small bumps and grooves and the auto steering makes the machine try to turn when I don't want it to. It's almost uncontrollable. I talked to Shepherds in Townsend, MA where I bought it and they said it's a problem they've been hearing about. They're interim solution was to have me raise the blade. Now I have to scrape my driveway with a shovel after snowblowing if I want to get it down to pavement! They put me on a list with other customers so that they could talk to their Ariens Rep. Never heard from anyone. Ariens has to come up with a fix to lock the wheels and turn off the auto steer. Nice idea, very bad design.

                Comments about Ariens Deluxe 24:

It blows really good, it is an easy starter with the Briggs and Stratton engine with adequate power. One draw back is the snow collects on the choke and key switch then freezes for start up next time, so I turn the key back to on and put the choke on when I shut it off. The hand warmers are a good addition to have.

I chose the Ariens Deluxe 28 after researching all makes and models. The decision was clear for the following reasons: (random order)

                  1) 14" serrated augers and 14" impeller. 14" moves more snow faster.

2# The impeller housing and chute is all steel. Other makes, even with steel chutes, have a plastic piece on the impeller housing connecting to the chute. Ariens is solid thick steel. It will not break, clog, or flex.

3# Top fill commercial grade cast iron gear box. Other makes with split aluminium cases appeared to have gasket mist on the seam whilst sitting unused on the showroom floor.

                  4) Auto-turn. I cannot stress enough how much I like this feature. I can zero turn with one hand. No axle pins or triggers needed. If I want to go left or right, I go left or right. No more effort than a shopping cart. Once the turn is complete, both wheels automatically lock and drive. If you could test drive throwers, this alone could seal the deal. Other manufacturers will follow with the same feature in due time.

                  5) Steel dash. I didn't think it an issue until I used it. It looks very nice and of high quality. Other makes with plastic notches, for gear and chute deflection, flex and have poor fitment.

                  6) Fit, finish, and paint. I found a noticeable superiority in quality of the Ariens. The metal feels and sounds thicker. The welds are uniform. The paint is absolutely flawless. I have seen cars with less quality paint finish. The decaling is flawless, shiny, and appears a cut above other makes. If comparing manufacturers, I suggest visiting a showroom and feeling and tapping the throwers. The images on the internet can't differentiate the fit and finish like a tactile inspection.

                  7) The ergonomics of the controls is perfect. The speed and chute deflection controls are to the right of the dash. The auger control locks with the drive control allowing the right hand to be free. Most makes have this feature, but the controls are close at hand on the Ariens. The chute rotation handle is ahead of the dash rather than behind as on most makes. It seemed odd at first sight but proved to be superior in use.

                  8) Excellent tires. The tires are large and grip with deep treads. There is no need for chains.

                  9) The headlight is halogen. It is not all illuminating, but a halogen bulb is a step up from the typical 1156 incandescent automotive tail light bulb on other makes. Small improvement but indicative of the quality goal Ariens is thriving to achieve.

I have used the Deluxe 28 during several heavy snows. It is thus far without a fault. It throws far and with minimal blow back, even into the wind. I attribute the minimal blow back to superior chute design. It is higher and better shaped. I don't see a need for a snow cab.

The 254cc engine is powerful and handled all tasks. I found it surprisingly quiet compared to a Tecumseh Snow King. Thus far the engine seems to be fuel efficient. I have read many reviews and blogs regarding country of origin for snow engines. The debate is pointless. All current snow engines from all makes are made in China. Engines are designed in USA and built in China to USA manufacturers specifications. This is a socio-economic issue, not a quality issue. The Ariens AX #LCT#, Briggs Polar Force, and Powermore engines all have similar architecture and performance. All modern engines benefit from modern metallurgical advances and technologies that far exceed the ancient and now defunct standard, Tecumseh Snow King. The engine is no longer a deciding factor in a snow thrower. They are all equally good and of similar power and cc.

The electric start is a standard feature on all throwers worth looking at. I used it once because it was there. In reality, the engines start so easily with the recoil pull string, that it seemed more time and effort to use the electric starter. With age, wear, and cold, #me and machine# I'm sure the electric start will come into it's own.

When I inspected my Deluxe 28 I sensed a pride in manufacture as evident by numerous grease pencil markings on the machine. Somewhere, somebody will blog a complaint about grease pencil markings on their new machine. Those marks are a hard working man or woman's signature. A signature that Ariens takes the time to check the unit was properly made. That worker takes pride in their job and the product they make. Their job puts food on the family table and fills them with pride. I will not remove the marks.

I find it a rare and pleasant surprise when a product sold is of a satisfactory quality. All too often consumers are forced to choose which product is less junk. It is a shock when a product exceeds all expectations. Ariens exceeded my expectation. I am confident I chose the right manufacturer.

Finally, I would recommend any and all small engine machine purchases be made from an independent dealer. My machine was delivered to my garage. Not only was it fully assembled, but the shoes and scraper bar were set for my driveway type. The controls were all adjusted. The belt break-in was completed and the machine tested. I paid no more than the big box store. I have nothing against big box stores but they shouldn't be everything to everybody.

This was a glowing review from a person whom must be compelled by excellence to write a review. I hope my machine continues to be of quality and reliability.

After much research and a recommendation from a close friend I decided to purchase an Ariens Model 28" Deluxe. I was completely satisfied for the first three hours of use. During hour four of use, the tensioner spring for the drive idler broke. I could not a replacement spring from the store I purchased it from, however, they offered to exchange the whole unit for a new unit. Upon getting the second unit home I filled it with gas only to find the gas ran through the carburator and onto the floor. Again I hauled the unit nearly 60 miles back to town to get yet a third unit. Upon getting the third unit home, I found it had numerous fasteners loose (some were crossthreaded), none of the controls were adjusted properly, the spring to push the top chute open was not strong enough ( or needed adjusting), it was difficult to start, and then it went backwards while in 1st gear. After about an hour of usage I found a bolt laying on the ground where I had been working. I returned this unit as well.

I bought two of these snow blowers, one in 2009 (as a gift for my father) and the other in 2011 (for myself), both machines have worked excellent. What really impresses me about the machine is how well everything works. There are no cables to freeze, seize and break, the crank for the chute direction works excellent at -30 degrees, the long steel chute throws the snow a great distance and lever control for the distance flap on top of the chute does not freeze up in any conditions. Over the years I have run 8, 10, 11 HP snow blowers, I am not sure the horsepower of the 250 cc engine, but I do not feel I need a more powerful machine the OHV engine runs perfect. There are some negative comments about the positive wheel traction release and the machine not running straight, this mechanism needs to be lubricated every couple of years with winter grade grease. I do not use the feature but It does work well as long as it is lubricated and the machine will run straight with power to both wheels. I have bought two of these 250 cc/28" machines and would definitely buy another.

Just bought the deluxe 28 this fall. Have already used it about 5 times and most of them times it was very wet slushy snow. Anyone who says this won't throw the wet /slushy snow is lying!! This thing is a beast and works extremely well. The auto turn feature also works very well....very easy to maneuver. The only complaint is have is the very small gas tank.

I couldn't wait to step up to an Ariens. Had used a few in different locations and knew how well-made they were. After special ordering mine mid-winter from my local Biddeford dealer, I realized that I could not keep it going in a straight line. With the Autosteer, any variation in snow depth, density or change in pavement would make it dart wildly left or right. I also felt that it was geared too fast for 1st gear. It would stall in the plow furrow at the end of the drive. I had the dealer check it out a couple of times with no better results. Ariens support was no support at all. They put all the responsibility on the dealer. He did tell me that he would take it back toward another model in the fall when he received the next shipment. After six phone calls and four trips with the Deluxe 28 to the dealer to make the trade all he could do was say that he wasn't in business to lose money and would try to sell it as a used machine for me. After a few weeks I picked it back up and sold it myself for half what I paid. No more Ariens or local dealer for me.

I purchased our home in August and knew my first major purchase was going to be a snow thrower. After research and talking with friends I knew the Ariens was the way to go. Purchased the Deluxe 28+ and do not regret it. Had several storms and of course the Blizzard of 2013. We got 27 inches plus in CT. Could not wait to use the machine. No problems at all. Pushed right through the snow and threw it no problems. Had great traction. Heated handgrips were nice especially with the wind chill and the snow freezing up and coating the machine. Easy to use. Even had the wife making a few passes. But I quickly took it back because I was having too much fun. Would recommend this to anyone who wants great value and an even better machine.

For snow blowing, the 921037 does what I'd expect. It has done a good job handling several foot-plus snowfalls, which is what I expected from a machine of this size/class.

My big issue with the 921037 are leaking oil drain plugs (part number 20001303). My machine was delivered with a leaking oil drain plug, the one at the end of the extension tube. Subsequently the "dead" plug on the other side of the machine — a part you'd never have to interact with — started leaking. I find it ridiculous that a machine of this price has these defective parts — defective in design, defective in manufacture, defective in installation, whatever the case. I wish I had not made this purchase.

My experience fixing the first oil drain plug was a mess. Ariens technical support advised torque specifications to apply to ensure the plug was tight. My application of a torque wrench resulted in the oil drain washer snapping, and the extension tube threads shearing off inside the engine block. I had to have a local dealer remove the threads and replace the extension tube. I asked the dealer if he'd ever use a torque wrench on the plug or tube and he said no, in his experience these parts should be tightened by hand.

Even with a new plug installed, this time threaded with pipe tape, I've had another leak occur. To also have the "dead" plug on the other side start leaking, when a user wouldn't even need to touch this piece, only adds insult to injury. As I write this I still haven't resolved the other leak, and my attached photos show what the leak looks like.

Comments about Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO:

i rarely write reviews but feel compelled to write about my Ariens 28 SHO snowblower. I live in Vermont where we get some tough winters. I am on my second winter with my Ariens and I love this machine. I was initially hesitant to buy this big of a model but I am glad that I did. This machine handles any type of snow with no problem. It has great power and throws snow a great distance. The auger and chute are large so it rarely clogs except in the absolute wettest of snow. The unit is very maneuverable with the nylon slides. The controls are easy to use and engage solidly. I like that the controls are all metal and will not wear out like I read about with other manufacturers. The exhaust chute is all metal and will not change position with the strong exhaust of snow. The engine starts right up on the first pull. This machine is very heavily weighted in the front so it can clear better but can make it harder to raise the front for moving purposes. This is just a great quality machine that I know will last a very long time.

My only comments are that it is a thirsty machine and I think the fuel tank could be a bit bigger. Also, if you have a hilly driveway, you may want to get the chains because I find the wheels will slip because there is so much weight on the front end.

Comments about Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO:

I live on a corner lot and the plow dumps twice as much snow than my neighbors. It is not uncommon for the snow at the end of my driveway to be higher than the snowblower housing. To make things worse, there is only ~10 feet between my driveway, and my neighbor's. Therefore, I blow everything to the opposite side so that I don't throw it in his driveway/yard. Keeping in mind that my driveway is 27 feet wide, I needed a strong snowblower to clear my driveway to reach the lawn.

I came back from my parents this past weekend to approx. 30" of heavy snow at the end of my driveway. I had just picked up this blower the day before (perfect timing), and thought "time to put this thing to the test!" It didn't matter what I put it through, any snow went flying in the high and far... People must have thought I had a tractor. Yeah, it blew that strong.

I used this blower 3 times already, and I'm impressed. I'm really glad I bought this particular one. I also didn't experience the steering problem that people complain about (not being able to go straight). Mine goes straight as an arrow regardless of what's underneath. It only turns when I turn, just fantastic.

Comments about Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO:

Unlike my former blower the 28 SHO handles and throws any type of snow well clear of the drive. This was previously a problem at the end of the drive where snow banks became unmanageable due to road plowing and inability of the other machine to adequately clear and throw the snow. The power of the 28 SHO also allows me to clear up and down a relatively steep drive in short order. My other machine could rarely make it up the drive without propelling on a cleared path. The Ariens is a great machine.

I have been wanting an Ariens snow throw for years so I finally put up the dough and bought one and I'll tell ya what it's everything I expected, especially after using a 5hp 24 inch which took 2 hours to get that snow removed, this Deluxe 30 will get the job done on my lot in 30 to 45 minutes tops and that's even with blowing the street clear to the main road so me and the neighbors can get to work the next morning, this thing powers through the heaviest of snow without any engine bog, I live on the snow belt of Northern Michigan and how I managed with that little 5 horse is beyond me, I don't have to worry about that anymore, anyone interested in an Ariens Snow Throw can be rest assured it will be a solid investment.

I recently bought the new Deluxe 30 model. The last Ariens snowblower I had was an 32" STR series from mid-1990s. This was a great machine but I decided this year to buy another one rather than repair the old one. The following are the comparative design changes that make the new version a horrible machine to operate:
                                                    1. the return springs on both handles have too much tension on them, so that your hands get tired if you are gdoing a large job. My wife now refuses to use the machine because her hands are tired after 20 minutes;
                                                    2. the chute rotating mechanism is mounted on the left side so that you have to either reach across the machine to use it, which is difficult to do, or stop moving to make an adjustment;
                                                    3. the new narrow wheels (compared to the old wide tires) make the machine difficult to control on anything other than a flat surface. The machine gets pulled by even small ruts or bumps to either side because both the wheels and the wheel base is too narrow.
                                                    4. the auto-assist turning mechanism makes the issue of control even worse; so, as the machine is grabbed by ruts and bumps, the auto-turn mechanism thinks you are trying to turn, cuts in and accentuates the problem.

Blowing a straight line with this machine on anything other than a ciomplatekly flat surface is not possible and so you end up fighting the machine instead of simply walking along behind it. This model is a big disappointment and I am going to sell it, and take my loss as soon as I can.

BUYER BEWARE.I bought my 30" deluxe Jan30 2015 used it maybe 20-25 time to clear yard. Decided to service it again the other day & noticed the drive sprocket flopping on shaft! I took it to the dealer I bought it from for repair and was told both sleeve bearings were broken. I am not impressed that something like this would break so easily, poor design . I have lost my confidence in what I thought would be a good blower!

Purchased new this year, was nervous about the negative reviews related to the auto turn. I had one small snow, blower performed great, auto turn was totally fine. Just wonder if users with bad experience have never used a snowblower before.

Had a 22" snowfall over the weekend, snowblower worked great. Cleared my steep driveway very quickly. Traction was great, plenty of power, awesome machine.

I grew up with an Ariens and was always impressed with it. New machine is great, not a piece of plastic on the machine. Hope it lasts 35 years like my fathers has.

If you are looking to get an awesome forearm workout then this is the blower for you!!! I have a gravel driveway and I cannot keep blower going strait. As soon as blower hits any resistance(like snow) it thinks you're trying to turn and starts to turn. It is a constant battle to keep it straight. Wanted to love this blower but auto turn just doesn't work.

I was excited to get my new snow blower. Well, that disappeared quickly! I only used it 3 times due to the warm season we've had and the discharge chute stopped working. I'd turn the handle and nothing. I had to pay $45 out of pocket to have it picked up and I'm waiting to hear if I'll be stuck with more charges. So far this has been a lousy experience with Ariens.
