Purchased the Kawasaki LM-21-SW a year ago - and I would recommend this mower. But I do have a couple of modification I wish Ariens would consider.
If you have hills or any sloping terrain I would not recommend the swivel wheels. The unit wants to move in the direction of the slope. It would be nice if the swivel wheel lock mechanism would lock both wheels. One locked wheel is basically useless. I also need to load this machine onto a pickup and pushing it up a ramp is very tricky because of the swivel wheels.
Another issue is the pins that holds the front swivel wheels has fallen out a number of times. I have had to replace both pins (lost them in the grass) because the clasp that hold the pins falls out. I replaced both swivel wheel pins with new ones and replaced the clasp with a coder-pins. Now if I need to adjust my wheel height I have to replace the coder-pin. Makes it harder to adjust the height but now I am not at risk of losing the SW-Pin.
Changing the oil is next to imposable without making a mess. The drainage plug is set into the side of the engine disabling the ability to catch the oil when the drainage plug is removed. It would be nice if the unit came with some type of extension tube enabling the owner to change the oil without making a mess. I made an extension tube that I use enabling me to drain the oil out beyond the mower deck. Changing the oil a couple of times got me to think about this modification that should have been part of the design to begin with.
Like I said, I would recommend this unit. Over all it's a great machine. All of the above issues I have been able to work around making it a real nice unit.

I have not written a review for anything before but when Airens sent me an email asking me to review my purchase I couldn't resist. My father has an Airens roto-tiller he purchased used 30 years ago that has always worked great for all the gardens in the family as well as lots of neighbors so I had very favorable impressions of the brand. I purchased the mower from the Homeless Depot and used it once. It ran ok but was tough to start, I thought it was due to break-in. We had a extra cool, wet spring so I did not now again for several weeks. The mower was very hard to start, I had to use start fluid, looking at things I noticed the choke was not working properly. I found a local Airens dealer and took the mower in. After more than a week the shop called and said while they were an Airens dealer they were not authorized with Kohler so they could not work on the engine. I took the mower to Home Depot but the 30 days were up by a week or so, no luck there. I talked to Airens service rep who said there was a known problem with bad carbs. I was told to take it to a service center about 30 miles away. I dropped it off there and after a week they called and said that the problems were my fault and would not warranty it. Their reason was that there was grass on the inside of the air filter. I explained that it was due to my sons removing the air filter to spray starter fluid every time they had to start it or empty the bag. We had used it about 5 times on a 1/2 acre lot. I just gave the mower to a neighbor who wanted the wheels to replace his worn ones. I bought a Honda, my 10 year old daughter can start it right up. The Kohler engines, at least low end ones, are now made in China and quality is no where near what it once was.

Model 911037 Serial No. 00135 Starts most always on the first pull. Very good side disperse. Very comfortable handle position. Owning it for over 26 years and the only maintenance I have done is change the oil and sharpen the blade. I mow a 1-2 times a week from April - October.

      Good sturdy mower, but...

      Comments about Ariens Classic LM21:

Good machine, mows well, always starts (B&S engine). Found it didn't always shift the cuttings into the bag - especially if grass damp (wet summers here in UK) - had dealer weld wings onto blade to increase lift (the same as he did with a mate's Ariens) - no more problems lifting cuttings. This should have been standard for UK - the dealer knew exactly what I was wanting and how to achieve it.
Very disapointed with the drive - fine on level lawn but now mine isn't level (recently moved) - it's on an incline. Drive slips and is unreliable. I've had new drive bits (the rubber tyred wheel, etc..) and had the spring checked and tightened, but no better. Am now looking for a good mower with a direct drive with no possibility of slipping.

Have bought 4 of these mowers. A good cut, fast speed on the ground, not to heavy.
Problem is the bearings in the drive assembly don't last long. Pity as otherwise a great mower.
Getting parts in the UK a problem. Approved dealers not much help.

      Comments about Ariens Classic LM21:

I both this when I moved from a house that had a larger yard (had a rider) to a smaller yard. My primary reason for purchasing this mower (Scotts brand for Home Depot) was the overall design and specifically the front swivel wheels. Outside of normal maintenance and a replacing a few parts this mover still is running strong. A testimony to the quality products Areins puts out. I'd recommend this mower to anyone looking for a durable mower.

I bought an ariens because the snowblower I had was great and I heard good things about the brand. I now live in the South and am mowing zoysia grass. I have the Kawasaki engine. The engine is very hard to start. I've already had to replace a bearing in a rear wheel (under warranty). I'm also disappointed in the mulching ability. Also, this mower is much heavier than most others. It wouldn't be a big deal (it's self propel) but it barely hauls itself through the grass. Let's just say I'm in much better shape after buying this mower. The swivel wheels are gimmicky and you wouldn't need them except the mower is so heavy it is nice to have them-just as long as you have no hills in your yard. If you do, you'll be fighting the mower and the wheel lock on it is useless. It needs to lock both wheels. Oh, and the self propel speed selector sticks. I had to jimmy it to get it to work. I'm pretty surprised with all the positive reviews here. I hope it's not a case of "I just dropped way to much on this mower, I can't possibly not like it." I've already tried selling it to buy something else but I can't get any money for it. Looks like I'm stuck with it.

Comments about Ariens Classic LM21 SW:

Do not buy this mower. I've owned the LM21SW Classic (911184) for 4 years, so I'm now out of warranty but that doesn't really matter since it has never worked right anyway. Since purchase, I have not been able to get through mowing my 1/2 acre lawn without the self-propelled system drive belt slipping off at least once (today it was 4 times and I finished the lawn, with the belt slipped off, as a manual mower) . During its warranty period, I had it serviced several times but it still never got through the lawn without throwing the belt. I'm more than 45 minutes away from this service center so it's a hassle to bring it there and it's the only one in San Diego County.

I have replaced the drive belt 4 times, idler wheel 5 times, and idler spring 3 times myself. In fact, I now keep a supply of the drive belts, idler wheels and springs. When being serviced, at the authorized center, it appeared that the idler wheel, spring, and drive belt were also replaced each time. So we're looking at nearly 10 times and all this has been worthless.

The design of this system is a belt and idler wheel which is subject to a flaw, the belt pops off the pulley too easily. It appears the inset of the main pulley wheel is not deep enough (or the flange is too low) and that the idler wheel is made of plastic (I've melted a few of these).

I will never buy an Ariens with this type of self-propel system again and I recommend you don't either. Unless you like mowing the lawn as a manual push mower.

Comments about Ariens Classic LM21 SW:

my 1988 model 21S lasted over 20 years, rear drive tires had to be replaced a couple of times and the Briggs engine needed a carb kit a time or two. Other minor things along the way, but I figured the mower lasted near 1,000 hrs, not bad, not bad at all in Houston Texas where you mow 11 months of the year in fierce heat and humidity. My beef is that Ariens took that mower, and in my opinion at least, cheapened it and applied various cost cutting measures to make a great mower less great. In 2009 I could no longer get the METAL replacement rear wheels/tires due to model and design changes by Ariens; and thus the best mower on earth became a great boat anchor, even though it still starts and runs. The new models appear much the same but can't help feeling the new models are less stout than the old ones, no need for that.

Comments about Ariens Classic LM21 SW:

My wife & I mow 5 acres near Taree NSW Australia. Our cows have the remainder.
Taree's climate is similar to Savannah Georgia, so grass grows very fast as it does there.
Our front lawn area has 112 trees, made up of original native eucalypt trees & planted smaller native trees & shrubs. These eucalypts constantly shed bark, leaves & small twigs which the mower is expected to turn into fast decomposing lawn mulch.
Our back lawn contains 40 fruit & ornamental tree & a fenced vegetable garden.
We divide the lawn up into about 12 segments & mow every afternoon for about 1 hour in the 9 month growing season. Obviously this plan is undone by rainy days.

In 2005 we purchased the B&S 6.75hp Ariens 21 inch mower. The mower performed all the functions we asked of it, mowing around all our trees & under the shrubs to leave a very small area uncut for hand clippers. We mow 80% of the lawn at Notch 4 & the remainder at High.
The rear wheel rubber tyres wore out in 2010 which we thought was fair from the hours, however did complain when the new tyres only lasted 12 months & again 12 months even with extra care. To prolong tyre life we were forced to pay for a metal tyre guard for the outside of the tyre.
Also in about 2010 the idler wheel failed from use & I believe again in 2015. In 2013 the handlebars came away from the lawnmower body & our serviceman was able to re-weld them. The B&S engine lasted the life of the mower.
In 2015 the Ariens mower needed large amounts of replacement parts some of which were unobtainable, however, we were generally happy with the 10 years life & the quality of the final lawn appearance.

In October 2015 we purchased the equivalent Gravely mower with a Kawasaki

Comments about Ariens Classic LM21 SW:

I purchased this mower this spring(2015) because I have 2 acres in a somewhat hilly section of eastern West Virginia. I had owned a Toro 30" big mower. It was underpowered and just didn't do the job. However, my Ariens is just great. The mulcher part is good also! This mower has power and cuts really clean. The swivel front wheels allow me to get around the large number of trees on my property. This mower is as advertised. Just buy it and use it! You won't need another one! Sturdy and dependable!

Upgrade to the best! Buy an ariens LM 21S! The self-propelled on this mower is industry-leading it not only pulls you uphills but it stops you from rolling down hills when turned on. The other thing I like about ariens mowers is their use of quality engines most mowers on the market use aluminum cylinders which wear out very quickly the Kawasaki Engine has a cast-iron sleeve my ariens mower has a Tecumseh vector engine which also has a cast-iron sleeve. Honda mowers do not have cast-iron sleeves nor do most MTD mowers or craftsman this is a very good mower for anyone who want something that will last. The deck is very well constructed, my neighbor just throughout a Honda mower with a rusted out deck that was much newer.

I have owned the Classic LM21 S for just over 1 year. As a homeowner user with a 1/2 acre lot, I felt that this mower might be more than I needed but I wanted a durable and easy to use mower that would last a lifetime.

Putting the negative first, the idler pulley wheel design on this mower is very poor.

In one year, I have replaced the idler wheel three times. This is presumably due to misalignment. Basically the idler wheel is being melted by the drive belt which then necessitates its replacement. The design of the self-propel function is not sophisticated but it does rely of the belt being able to stay within the flanges of the wheel itself. However, the belt rides high and there is no way to adjust its height. So, as the idler wheel is made of plastic, it rubs and melts it until the belt will no longer stay on. It is unclear as to why the belt slips at all.

An aluminum idler wheel may solve this issue as would the ability to adjust the belt's or wheel's height. After three wheel replacements in 1 year, I am considering having an aluminum wheel custom made for me.

The mower, in all other respects, is excellent. It is very well made with a heavy gauge of steel for the decking which does not make the unit itself too heavy. The swivel front wheels make mowing around tight areas easy and have a lock-out for slopes. The Kawasaki engine is a dream with one-pull start even after two weeks of downtime.

All in all, this is an excellent mower that is marred by a poor self-propel design. Had I known of this issue, I would not have purchased this mower but instead have looked for one that was gear driven.

Runs great blows a little blue smoke when started. The self propel is a little tight when pushing around in garage the back wheels seem locked when you turn.

My speed control slides slowly into hi speed and remains there while I am using the mower. I am frequently adjusting the speed to slow down the machine otherwise I am chasing the mower.
I can adjust the setting by turning a bolt a quarter turn, but to get at the bolt is not easy as the cover plate is hard to reinstall. Also the connecting piece is made out of plastic and wont last.
              Otherwise, a terrific mower.

This is a great model! The swivel front wheels were the feature that sold me. The mower also has more than ample power. The mower is a single pull start and very easy to use. This is the second Airens same model that I have owned. I would recommend this model for use where there are landscape features that need precision movement with the lawnmower.

It's a good product, but I had an issue with the differential after only using it 4 times. I took it in to the dealer and they fixed it (cleaned and lubed). I never had this issue on my previous Ariens mower which I used for 15 years.
