I am a 25 year contractor in the skilled trades business, with extensive hands on experience in the knowledge, use and operation of large power equipment -- and from time to time , the repairing of said equipment. This review is written based on that platform, not on brand loyalty, etc. Before I state my official review, let me just add that I was using a one stage snow blower ( of a competing brand ) for several years prior, and I wanted to upgrade due to having more area to clear. Also, the one stage S.B. just couldn't do the larger , wetter snowfalls we get here in Ohio very well ; It would always clog up and I had to do the clearing in intervals : Going out after three inches of snow, and again after another three inches, etc. So before I went out and purchased a S.B. this time , I did extensive research online , studying the criteria of the different brands, the added features, etc. , and especially the reviews from various websites. Here is my official review for this product : I purchased it from my local Home Depot, they had a good price , and they had it shipped to the store and did not charge me shipping if I came and picked it up. I went down to the store with my friend and we loaded the fully crated machine in to my van . The Home Depot folks were a pleasure to deal with. I prefer to look at and touch things before I buy, so this was the right move for me. I know you can save just a few bucks more ordering from some other companies online, but then you have to deal with lots of problems I won't get in to here. The machine looked and felt solid. It was all metal, heavy gauge metal at that. Compared to the other brands that were set up around it in the store, it was a no brainer decision. I brought it home and read the owners manual very thoroughly, and then proceeded to assemble it. Listen folks, if you read reviews online somewhere about somebody saying that they put this thing together in 20 minutes or so, they are lying. Or, they are one of those idiots who wrote some bad review , saying that it broke down, or didn't perform, or some other nonsense. The reason it did, if they were telling the truth, is that they just flew through the assembly process and didn't bother to read the instructions. This is an expensive and complicated piece of machinery that will last you a lifetime if you just read the manual -- I mean read everything and follow it to the "T". It is not super difficult, but even though I am very skilled at repairing and assembly, it still took me almost four hours to do it right and cross all my T's and dot all the I's. I suggest for those out there that are "mechanically challenged" , to hire a local snow blower repair man # Yes they do exist -- check out your local Craigs' List ads # to assemble it for you. I'm pretty sure he could do it faster than me , but in all fairness to me, I could do it faster now too, if I had to put another one together ! Here in Ohio, we got our first heavy snowfall one week after I bought it , around Dec. 6th, 2013. This machine was a pleasure to operate, and the controls and features were easy to get used to. It performed exactly like all of the prior reviewers had said from my earlier research. As of today, Jan.28th. 2014, I have used it seven times , and I have become the envy of my neighbors . The last time I used it, cars were driving down the street and slowing way down to look at me -- my guess is that they were trying to figure out how some fairly compact machine could throw 5 to 6 inches of snow 40 plus feet ! Or , maybe they were one-stagers , as I now can call them , and they were trying to figure out what brand of two stage S.B. I was using. Kudos to the Ariens Co., for making it bright orange and easily identifiable ! This product is very durable, and I expect to have it for many, many years to come. It started up on the first pull, right out of the box , and every time since ! I am 54 years old and in physically great shape , so I don't use the electric starter. The headlight was a necessity for me, since I do quite a bit of snow clearing in the evening hours. And it does help immensely. One tip I would like to add : Buy yourself a can of silicone/ Teflon spray and before the first use, spray the entire inside area's of where the snow will accumulate , like the chute, etc. The snow won't stick very much to those places when you are finished. I actually sprayed the entire machine , inside and out, and I am glad that I did that. When you put it in your garage after a good use, the snow just falls off the next day or so. I also bought one of those 4'x 3' indoor-outdoor rugs, and I park the machine on it after I'm done . I was watching a Discovery program shortly after buying this and they were showing ski resort operators in Europe using Ariens branded equipment -- that only reinforced my decision that I bought from the best company. There are many more things I can say, but this review is already very long , so let me say this : It takes forever to go through a tank of gas ! This is a great buy for someone looking for an American made S.B. that is built to last. P.S. -- My driveway is 100' long with a huge parking area in the rear , and it takes me less than 30 minutes to clear 4 - 5" of snow !

The reason that I bought an Ariens snow blower is that I own an Ariens lawn mower and am totaly sold on them. The lawn mower that I own is well designed and built like a tank. So, when I thought it was time to replace my Toro 521 two stage snow blower (I bought it new about 25 years ago and love the machine.) Toro does not make that model or anything like it so I bought the closest thing in an Ariens. This was a mistake.I did not even check other brands as I figured the design would be sound. This machine is a contradiction. It is unbalanced with most of the weight toward the back (I think I know why and I will tell you in a minute) of the machine. This make the blower want to ride up on the snow and not stay on the surface being cleared. Ariens remedies this by offering a front weight bar that bolts on the blower housing. It is just a bar of mild steel with two holes drilled in it and painted orange. They want a whopping $70.00 for this bar to fix their design flaw, it must be the special orange paint. It really does not matter if you add the weight or not, because the drive wheel do not get enough traction to push the machine along. This is why I think the weight of the machine is toward the back, for better traction. It does not help. They put ROUND profile tires on this blower so there is very little drive contact with the pavement. The engine has plenty of power for the blower and I'm sure enough for the drive wheels. You could put a V-8 engine on this thing and it would not matter as the round profile tires don't have enough surface contact to do any good, they just spin at the least resistance. So, my nice new shiny Ariens blower sits in the garage and I am still using my 25 year old Toro 521 two stage blower. If I could find a pristine Toro 521 I would buy it and lose the Ariens as a backup. I am very unhappy with the new Ariens. It truly is a dog of a machine and very frustrating to use.

Comments about Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower:

I truly can't say anything negative about this machine. When it comes to the quality, power, and capabilities of the Compact 24, I am FAR more than just impressed with the exceptional performance from this machine I have owned now for 4 seasons.

I not only clear my driveways and walkways, I also clear areas of my lawn out for the dogs to go and play. No matter how deep or wet the snow is, this machine clears it with almost no effort at all and throws the snow a good 30 feet. I have honestly never been more impressed with a snowthrower of this size. It EASILY gobbles up well over the 12" of snow it is rated to clear. I have put this machine to work cutting down large snow banks blocking the driveway and sidewalks that have been built up by the road plows and have never had a problem with them. Since snapping the shear pin on a stump in the first season, after that fix I have never had a service issue with this machine.

      Better than SnoTec

Comments about Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower:

After Ariens replaced SnoTec 28 for qualit issues with a Compact 24, the 24 works great after readjusting the clutch/brake. First time use and the auger would not stop.
With 200 miles back and forth taking the SnoTec for repairs I decided to adjust the 24 myself.
I would not recommend any snow thrower from Arien unless you check it out at the dealership 100% before purchase.
Unless you are willing to adjust it yourself

Excellent snow blower for its size

      By

Comments about Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower:

Would not buy anything else. It is powerful for a compact, and can handle much more than it is rated. Used it for plow drive way berms carefully, and it handled it just fine. This machine starts easy, do not even use electric start. If anything I would change, it would be to buy chains or switch to tracked model in the hope of not having to push machine through harder snow. Great for city and towns.

Comments about Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower:

Used this product a few times now. In hindsight tracks may be better as wheels slip and dig in. In hard snow really have to push it through. Note, do not have chains yet either. The engine starts first time, do not even use electric start. Engine is very powerful and will slow down when really hard snow but goes through with little problem. Even cleans snow berm from the street plow with a little effort. Over all a very good quality machine, very well built and does more than I would have expected from a compact. Also takes up less room in the garage because of its size.

Comments about Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower:

1st time using the compact 24 was in the 30 inch snowfall to hit New Jerseye this January.
1st pass I did was thru snow at least 16 inches deep. Cleared it with no problem.
Cleared the driveway apron after the plows went by pretty easily.
      So far so good .

Cuts through snow like a hot knife through butter

      Cons

        Best Uses

Comments about Ariens Compact Track 24:

This is a powerful machine for its size. The tracks pushed the machine through our recent record-breaking snowfall of 31 inches in 24 hours. It climbs our steep driveway without a problem. It is difficult to maneuver and turn and you can't push the machine when the engine is not running and in gear. The fastest speed in reverse is very slow. The scoop can be raised, however the pile of snow left under the machine causes the machine to get bogged down when the scoop is raised. Overall, it is a very sturdy and solid machine. This is my third snowblower and by far the best.

            What a Machine!!

Comments about Ariens Compact Track 24:

Just took delivery of the Hydro Pro track 28" with 420cc engine. I traded in my Toro 1332 Power Shift for this new machine. The reason I bought a new snow blower was the Toro would always get clogged up when I needed it the most, even using the spray. I would then have to use my single stage Honda. Our driveway is 250" long with 70' wide by the garage doors. I would always have to blow the driveway twice because the Toro was inferior to the Honda on heavy snow. We just had 16" of snow in Chicago on Feb 1st, and the first attempt to clear the snow was wet and heavy. I was tired of having to do all this extra work. That should now be a distant memory!! Our driveway is now clean and dry but obviously I need to find some snow to try out the new machine. Two and half feet of packed snow at the edge of the driveway would be a good test. The combination of Auto steer plus Hydro drive makes maneuvering very easy with no stress on the back, even on dry pavement. . I was concerned about buying the Trac system vs tires based on online reviews, but this combo is perfect and very easy to operate. The engine is quiet and smooth, and easy to pull start, even though it has electric start. The machine went thru the packed snow like a hot knife thru butter, and the volume of snow being thrown looked like I was making snow for a ski hill. What a blast!. Can't wait for the next snow fall.

Comments about Ariens Compact Track 24:

This is a tank with an attached snow blower. I have a steep and dangerous driveway that this track model laughs at. The unit is not especially fast but I'm in no hurry. Safety is my primary concern and that's what this model delivers. Contractors would definitely want a larger model.

Turning on tracks was a concern but I quickly learned to turn while in motion. It takes some effort but nothing an average person can't handle. I plow a ground-level trex deck attached to my home and I can get within six inches of the siding without problem. Again, I plan my turns in advance.

The track model allows me to raise the front off the ground (two positions) and drive across grass or any other irregular surface, plowing as I travel. I find that very useful when plowing my deck or moving from one part of my property to another. Deep snow on the lawn is no longer a barrier to winter travel.

I store mine in a shed. I drive straight in, store it and back straight out when I need it. Yes, movement is somewhat challenging due to high track friction. If you attach small, sturdy castors to a 24" by 24" sheet of plywood you can raise the unit, slide the platform underneath and then move the blower where you want it. Wheeled units are much easier to move so be sure you can deal with tracks.

I replaced the metal skid shoes with the non-abrasive shoes. I plow a trex deck along with expensive pavers and I DO NOT want to scratch either surface. The non-abrasive shoes are all I'll ever use.

If you need a track unit for your home I strongly suggest you consider this model. I purchased mine from a local dealer who assembled, tested and delivered it to my home ready to go.

Comments about Ariens Compact Track 24:

Recently purchased Compact Snow Thro and have used it twice on our driveway and parking areas in Connecticut. I am generally satisfied with its performance to date. It works best on new, dry snow that is at least 2-3 inches in depth. It does not work well with slushy snow (clogs the discharge chute) and does not get down to the pavement well, leaving a coating of snow particularly if it has been packed down a bit by the passage of our regular snowplow guy. It doesn't "breeze through hard packed snow drifts" as advertised. It will merely ride up over hard packed snow. I would like to be able to adjust the scraper blade to actually scrape down to the pavement.

I ordered the track that had the lever to help steer it but didn't receive that unit. This Compact Track 24 is very difficult to turn around at the end of the drive. You have to stop and pick up on the handles and swing it around to face the direction you want to go. It is also extremely slow even in the fastest gear and reverse is 10 times slower. Unlike my wheeled unit I used to have, you cannot move this without starting it and putting it in gear. You can't push or pull it.
