I bought my Zoom 34 after having an original friction-drive Dixon 30" for around 20 years. Since Dixon was sold to another company, the friction-drive model isn't available any more. I've operated hydrostat-drive large machinery so I was thrilled to have a hydrostat-drive ZTR for less than I'd paid for my Dixon so long ago.

Was I ever disappointed! The Zoom steering is sluggish compared to my Dixon and I have to be very careful to not oversteer lest I make the wheels spin and tear up the turf. While it's solidly built (425 lbs!), it seems heavy for it's size, especially compared to my old Dixon, too big for a standard yard but too small for the acreage it's targeted for. What's more, even with the seat adjusted all the way back, I still have the steering levers in my gut, and I'm not that large of a man.

Then there's the mower drive belt. About the 2nd time I used it, the belt came off the drive pulley when it first engaged, which burned a notch in the belt. That seems to happen about 1 time in 10 so I don't expect that belt to last much longer and it looks like a real pain to replace. One of these days I'll take the time to try to bend the belt guides in enough to keep the belt in place.

The twin-blade design operates at high RPM since the blades are so short and really shoots out the cut grass, making quite a mess. After a couple of mowings, I bought the mulch kit. It's very difficult to remove the blades (no way to lock the spindle to turn the nut off once the blade spins on the shaft), but I got the kit installed. Even though I keep the blades razor sharp, the cut is sloppy, leaving many stray grass blades uncut (St. Augustine). At first I thought it was grass in the wheel tracks, but soon came to realize it was the middle of the right blade (usually). I think the problem is that there's nothing to keep the cut grass from circulating at high velocity in the mower deck until it builds up and pushes uncut grass down so it can't be cut. The mulch kit either needs baffles in the top of the mower deck to stop cut grass from circulating (the Dixon had bolt-in vanes and it did an excellent job) and/or a baffle between the blade chambers so the left blade doesn't load the right blade with grass cuttings.

BTW, the Home Depot folks didn't know to release the hydrostats to roll the machine when loading it into my pickup (the crate wouldn't fit between the wheel wells), so new buyers should be aware of that quirk. Maybe a tag on the machine, inside the crate, would suffice.

When I bought the Zoom, a hood bumper was missing (so the engine hood had scratched the paint), a rear tire was flat, and the battery was dead. I contacted Ariens customer support and they immediately shipped a rubber bumper and new wheel (tire and rim) at no charge. I charged the battery and kept it on a trickle charger ever since and have had no problems with it. The flat tire did have a slow leak so I replaced that wheel with the replacement and haven't had any problems with that since then. I would rate Ariens customer support as excellent.

Bottom line: while the price is the best you'll find for a ZTR, I think the Zoom 34 has some design flaws that should be addressed.

Zero turn.

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

Great mower well built. Old mower had no turning radius, so I just hit the high spots and used a push mower to get the trim. Then a weed eater to finish. Now I have no need for a push mower. I have had my mower for 7 years and have had no problems. Fun to ride and a great time saver.

Makes mowing the lawn fun again!

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

Bought the zoom 34 last year, because I had to get through the neighbors gate, and it has been the best investment I've made in years. I have recently been mowing the neighbors yards due to their age and also doing my mother-in-law down the street. In all I mow 5 yards including my own. Fortunately they are all small fenced in yards of maybe 1/3 acres. This thing turns on a dime, cuts in both directions, mulches and runs like a deer through these yards! What use to take me 3 1/2 hours now takes me a little over 1 1/2 hrs! Well made, great engine and relatively quiet, a very economical machine for the average homeowner. Learning to drive the machine takes about ten minutes and maintenance is all accessible and well thought out! Thinking on buying another for my son who has a much larger plot . . .

The good the bad and the ugly

By

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

The Good: Powerful motor, great maneuverability does a very nice cut. Cut my cutting time down to 45 Minutes from an hour and 1/2.
The Bad: Stiff ride, seat is not comfortable nor can I move it back far enough for my 6'3" frame. B&S Engine knocks a lot and sucks gas.
The Ugly: Tires tear up the lawn in a tight turn and damp earth I have had to learn to really slow down in turns due to this. If the tires were wider and turf grade [not so knobby] this might not be a problem.
Overall am pleased after 5 months and 10 cuttings.

So Far I have not any problems cutting grass with my Zoom34! Still have to use the grascutter for cerain spots! Fun to operate but not fun to wash! I cannot get all the grass off the mowerdeck and blades but I did exactly what you told me and I will keep on trying! I love my Zoom 34! It is my new baby! I do not know how often to sharpen the blades or change the oil though! I might use synthetic next oil change! Made in America is great! My 60's Ariens snowblower is still running strong so I know my Zoom will be with me for a long time!

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

The flaws it has are the same flaws that you will find in every make of Zero Turn Mower. Basically they would be tire spin, and bald spots cause by the tires when you turn too sharp. With a little practice, you learn to control those. Other that that, the mower does a great, and quick job, especially if you have a long, straight run. It's a well built machine.

I enjoy mowing again!

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

I'm very happy with my purchase. I have a 1/2 acre and have done OK with a self-propelled mower up to now. But with a growing family and a lot of activities time is at a premium and mowing became an unenjoyable chore that I could not keep up with. My new Ariens Zoom 34 solves that problem and I love mowing again!

This is my first ZTR and the steering took some getting used to, but after a time or two around the yard it became second nature. I also love that it fits perfectly through a standard size chain link fence gate.

I wish it had an hour meter and a washout port. I also think the cut is not perfectly even but I will have the blades sharpened over the winter.

All in all, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

Comments about Ariens Zoom 34:

Three months into the cutting season with a new mower. So far so good. Only problem is the grass seems to clump and stick to deck underneath. Grass has been very moist this year, hoping that is why it is clumping. Wish I could find gator blades for the Zoom 34. Those are the best blades for side discharge mulching.

Had a John Deere Tractor for many years and it still ran and cut very well. I kept hearing guys tell how they liked the zero turn, so I sold my tractor and bought an Ariens, Best decision I ever made. It cut the mowing of my 2 acres almost in half and it's so much fun. The fact that it's American made is just a plus. I used to have to slow down in the spring when the grass was thick but now I just plow right through it and still get an excellent cut. I also love the very confortable seat and the fact that you can lean back on it. Some of my lawn used to be a hay field and is kind of rough, so I wish it had some shock absorbers.

Live in Michigan, bought this in September and returned it October for full refund. First problem was with salesman, specifically told him about the steep hill I have because of a walk out basement over 20 degrees, he replied this is a pressurized oil system just like the commercials and you will not have a problem. Guess what happened i have a problem, every time I went up or down the hill enough smoke came out of the mower that my neighbor thought my house was on fire. Second problem was the paint finish flaked off on many areas and I only owed it for 29 days. Would not suggest to you that you purchase this product.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!

Comments about Ariens Zoom 42:

I wanted to share my thoughts about the Ariens Zoom 42 I received yesterday. I have wanted a zero turn tractor for quite some time and wanted to treat myself due to me turning 50 years old in a few months. There are many zero turn tractors in the market place and I researched many online. I chose the Ariens Zoom 42 due to the high praise and positive remarks concerning this mower. When the trucking company arrived yesterday with my order I felt like a kid at Christmas. I ordered the mower from Mchenry Power Equipment in Mchenry Illinois online. The salesman Art was very helpful and professional. When I finally got the crate removed I was totally impressed with what I saw. The pictures I reviewed online did the mower no justice. The quality and craftsman ship A+++. I checked the oil and added fuel and boy did it come to life. The Kohler 20 HP engine was very smooth and strong. I tried the mower out today and the cutting performance and power were incredible!!! No bog and the mower zipped through with no trouble. Thanks Ariens for a great mower at a great price!!!

Easy to drive. It took one mowing to get the hang of it but what fun. Looked at a Toro and others but the triple blade deck and reviews sold me on Ariens. Only Ariens had a 42" deck with three blades. The triple blades mows real nice. I bought some nice wheel covers for it. looks real cool.

So far, so good - did have battery issue

Comments about Ariens Zoom 42:

I just purchased my Zoom 42 from a dealer (not Home Depot) in Cincinnati area on 7/19/2013. They had to order it in as there weren't any in stock. It arrived in a reasonable time and I went with my Dad and his pick-up to get the machine. It fit nicely in the back of his full size Chevy. We loaded it backwards with a forklift at the shop where purchased and slowly lowered it to the ground by rolling forward on ramps when we got it home. I don't recommend driving if off or on a truck bed at such an angle especially if you are new to zero turns. It started up when we got it home just like it had at the shop. Started the next day, Saturday the 20th, too when I mowed the yard for the first time with it. Mowed beautifully. However, when I went to mow again on Wednesday, 7/24, the battery was basically dead- just weakly turned the engine once and stopped. Fortunately, I was able to use an extra battery of my Dad's to start it and mow again. Mowing is very fun with this thing - I only have a 1/2 acre and wish I had 3 now. I took the battery to the shop and they will try to charge again for 2 days and then load test it to see if it is a good battery. If not, they will replace. A bit of a headache, but not Arien's fault. Love the mower and would have given 5 stars except for the battery issue.

A fast mower

By

from Priddis AB Canada

Comments about Ariens Zoom 42:

I bought a Zoom 42 in June 2013 because it was narrow enough to mow around my many trees. I must say on a level lawn it is an amazing mower, very fast and easy to operate. However on a slight incline it is useless. The tires have no traction and you slide sideways out of control without having a brake. The only way to stop is to pull both levers back which makes the wheels spin backwards and hopefully you are not going to slide into something. I cannot mow the side ditches of my driveway with this machine. I have to mow them with my old tractor which totally has no problem with this slope. Another annoying thing is that the muffler is so close to the ground that it burns patches of grass at every turn or slow maneuver or god forbid stop on the lawn to do something else or run out of fuel for instance. The thing is you only notice it 2 days later. I was ready to return the mower only to find out there is a 25% restocking charge so I fixed the problem myself by manufacturing a heat shield and bolting it to the rear bumper. This is a huge design fault. The gas tank is also fairly small so you can mow for about 2 to 2-1/4 hours before running out of gas. There is no gas gauge visible from the seat so you have to keep track of your time to prevent running out of gas. If the company addresses these issues and rectify them it is definitely a good little machine for a perfect level yard.

Comments about Ariens Zoom 42:

This is my first zero turn mower I've owed I had my 42' cut Zero Turn Ariens for a year. It had an oil leak at the lower end of the oil fill tube which was fixed at no charge for parts and labor, however pick-up and delivery of the mower was not covered. I just had a front tire go flat and had to have it replaced. My largest concern is the unit gets stuck easily in wet/soggy ground due to the weight of the mower or its smaller rear tire size. All-in-all the mower starts easily and cuts well and is a dream to ride.

When we both lost our jobs in 2009 and couldn't find comparable new ones we decided to try something different and purchased a bed and breakfast in Florida. The seller said he had a lawn mower so I left mine back in St. Louis for the purchasers of our house there.

The house was on two and a half lots, which is to say it's one big mother. The first time I tried to mow I discovered that while the lawn mower I left was self-propelled, this one was not. Being over sixty, after just ten minutes in the hot Florida sun pushing this mower I was exhausted. This just would not do.

A new friend gave me the name of a young man who had a small landscaping company and I called him and he offered to cut our lawn for one flat monthly fee of $165.00. At the time we thought our bed and breakfast was going to be busier than it turned out, so I agreed.

It didn't rain much, and Carlos was only coming twice a month to cut the grass and edge. I decided we really couldn't afford to have a "gardener" at our current income level. I rationalized at the rate Carlos was charging, if I bought a pretty good self-propelled lawn mower and cut the grass myself. "within 3 months it would pay for itself."

The Ascent Up The Mower Food Chain Begins

I sold the little "toy" mower I had on Craigslist and ordered a self-propelled mower on line from Home Depot. It cost me just under $300. It worked great for three weeks. Then it wouldn't start. I went back on line and read through the reviews, and now in addition to the ones I first saw when selecting this model, there were two that stated they had difficulties after 3 or 4 cuts getting the mower to start. Yikes!

I decided if I could get the new mower in the trunk of my car I was going to return it to my local Home Depot. It just barely fit, but I was able to transport it back to Home Depot and they were very nice about my returning it.

Why Not Get A Riding Mower?

Now I was in this mindset where by using Carlos as my baseline, I could justify an even bigger purchase. If he charged $165 a month to cut our lawn, it would only take me a little over 4 months to save what the smallest riding mower cost at $699. That was the case I presented to my wife. To my amazement she agreed and once again I got on line and ordered the next mower from Home Depot. The reason I kept going on line was because I don't own a truck, and delivery was free on this mower.

When the mower arrived it came on a pallet and the delivery driver and I pushed it up the incline of my driveway and into our yard. I unpacked it and found I needed to assemble the steering column, wheel, and the seat. Not a major problem, and done within about twenty minutes. With my wife's help, we got the mower off the pallet and I filled the tank with gasoline and started it up.

There was a learning curve and I hit a tree or two, the fence, a wall, but ultimately mastered tooling around the lot on it. The only problem was because I had bounced it off of several immovable objects, the tires all went flat. I was able to fix them all with tire sealer, which in fact the manufacturer recommended in the owner's manual to prevent leaks and dry rot.

I had cut the lawn four times and was on my fifth when I ran over a small rut in the lawn. The front wheels turned violently perpendicular to the axle, and because I was gripping the steering wheel fairly tight, a plastic adapter cracked. Suddenly, I had no steering! I narrowly avoided hitting a tree head on.

I called up the manufacturer, and the man I spoke with said he would send me a new adapter at no charge. I told him that I thought they should have made that part out of metal, and not plastic, and he agreed. He said the part would arrive in about a week.

A week went by and the part didn't arrive. I called the manufacturer again and this time talked to someone else. The gentleman was quite candid. First, he informed me that he had no record of the part being ordered for me. Secondly, he said that particular part was out of stock on backorder. Last, and most importantly, he told me that 280 other people were waiting for that part. Double YIKES!

I concluded that this was an engineering defect, and felt the mower should be recalled. Someone could get hurt; I almost did.

Good Old Carlos To The Rescue

After talking it over with my wife, we decided if I was going to use a riding lawn mower, I needed to get a good one, not a cheap one that put my life in danger. Using the Carlos base formula of saving $165 a month, I reasoned I could buy a bigger and better riding lawn mower for about $1000, and have it "paid off" in approximately 6 months.

This time I couldn't take the mower back to Home Depot in the trunk of my car, so I called up Carlos and arranged to hire him to bring over his trailer and help me take the riding mower to Home Depot and wait for me to buy another one, that we would bring back home. We decided to do this on Saturday at 9:00 AM.

Carlos showed up on time and we slowly loaded the riding mower on to his trailer. Every few feet I had to straighten the front wheels with my hands, as we could not steer it. When we got to Home Depot I went inside with the paperwork to do the return. While I was at Home Depot I saw an Ariens riding mower with a zero turn radius that was on sale. It was marked down from $2300 to $1999. I called up my wife and told her this was what I really wanted, and that I had just settled for each of the other ones because of price.

The Carlos Formula Works Again!

Using the Carlos base formula of $165 per month in "savings" I estimated at $1999 for the new riding mower, I could pay it off in about a year. Quite a leap from the first self-propelled walk behind mower that would have been paid off in just a few months.

We got the new riding lawn mower home, and Carlos was kind enough to try it out for me and then teach me how to operate it. It was fast and powerful, and unlike the cheaper riding mower did not require a complicated shifting process to change speeds or go into reverse. All I had to do was pull a lever on each side back to go in reverse. I quickly learned how to turn using the levers, and how to get really close to objects in the yard without hitting them.

I decided to post a review of the riding mower that I had problems with and got on line and gave a detailed report. I explained exactly what part was made out of plastic and quoted the man who told me 280 of those parts were on back order. I ended my review with my opinion that a major recall should be down on that model.

A week later I received a telephone call from Home Depot's corporate office. The nice lady I spoke with reviewed my report. I informed her I hadn't given up on Home Depot and described my ascent up the lawn mower food chain. I explained how I went from a $299 self-propelled lawn mower to a $1999 zero radius turning riding mower.

She told me that Home Depot appreciated my feedback as well as my loyalty to their store. In appreciation she said they were sending me a $500 gift card! Triple Yikes! SWEET!

I received the card within a few days of her telephone call. Meanwhile, I have cut my lawn for the past year now with the Ariens riding mower and am happy to report I am completely satisfied with it, and have had no problems at all.

According to my calculations, using the Carlos formula, in the past year I have more than paid for my new Ariens riding mower. I haven't had one single problem with it, and even after a year it's still fun to tool around on. My wife says she's just happy I wasn't in the market for a new car.

Comments about Ariens Zoom 50:

I spent a couple weeks researching ZTR mowers before deciding on the Ariens Zoom 50. I looked at all the box home improvement and tractor stores, but ended up buying this from a local dealer. The Ariens design is nicer and more compact than some of the other brands, and I found out that the other ZTR brands are made by the same manufacturer with different stickers on them - Ariens are their own standalone brand, made in the USA!

This was my first time with a ZTR, and it took me about 1/2 of the first mowing to get used to it. But our 2 acres with about 20 trees, sandbox, well, etc. only took about 35 minutes on the first mow - it used to take over an hour with our old 46" mower! Plus the lines are perfectly straight, and the circles around the trees are perfect!

My wife, who is now 8 months pregnant, insists on mowing every week. Even at 8 months pregnant, the ride is smooth enough, and it is easy enough to drive that anyone should be able to master it. I even recommended that my 80 year old father with 5 mowed acres consider getting one!

After three months and a dozen mows, we haven't had a single issue - which I would hope with any new mower purchase. One thing I found is that my wife and I have now become "mower snobs" and look down on people we see mowing their lawns with standard steering wheel drive mowers!

If you are thinking about getting this mower, stop thinking and get it! If you are thinking about buying a different mower, buy this one!

A poor "investment"

Comments about Ariens Zoom 50:

Repeatedly and without apparent reason, the Hydrostatic Belt jumps off resulting in a lawnmower that cannot and does not function.
I bought the mower because Gravely is an old respected name.
I am hugely disappointed.

Ariens Z50

Just purchased a new house with 1 acre of lawn to mow. This beast handles the humps, trees, hills and grass with ease. I even has an area of previously un-mowed hay/grass which was about 18" high. Went through it like it was nothing. Neighbor was mowing his lawn with an Ariens tractor and could only mow at half the rate this beast can mow at.

Worth every penny.

Comments about Ariens Zoom 50:

This machine rocks! I have almost 2 acres and this thing makes short work of it. This is my 3rd Mower in 12 years and by far the best. My lawn looks like a golf course. Nice ride and easy to clean. I also own an Ariens snow blower. Made in America and they are are well built!

Poor design for using with a bagger

Comments about Ariens Zoom 50:

The mower is great, but when you use it with the optional bagger, it blows clippings out of every part of the mower ang bagger. It covers the operator with clippings. I have used weatherstripping and duct tape and still have the problem. If you don't want to use a bagger, then this is a great product.
