I bought my Lawn Tractor in 2012 from Home Depot. I have over 2 acres of land to cut and so I decided on a 42 inch deck. I have yet to have a problem in the 2 years I've used the lawn tractor, except finding new blades. That is the only problem I've had in 2 years and that is because of the property. Little did I know there were boulders hidden by the grass. So yeah it was a lil bit hard on the blades and they held up until a week ago. That is when I chipped a blade. I've since found Ariens parts store so I no longer have to search for the blades or anything else I may need.
For what I paided for the Lawn Mower and how much I use it for work, it is a very good value for me.

I like the Kohler engine. The brake pedal linkage to the transmission is sloppy, as is the parking brake linkage. Can't get the deck level side to side (more than a half inch off), and I would like to be able to get more than 3.5 inches blade height when the deck is set to position 4. A blade height of 5 inches would be ideal.

Not sure how, but the center idler pully jammed and quit turning and the drive belt wore one side of it down to the hub. Easy enough to fix, but might be due to the deck hanging design.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 17-42:

Purchased the lawnmower in June 2014 from Home Depot. Less than one season of mowing and the front axle has broken. Mower squeaked from day one, couldn't find any parts to tighten up, and lubed all fittings. Just very disappointed in the quality of the workmanship. Will wait to see how well Ariens handles warranty service and repair.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 17-42:

Purchased this mower in May of 2014. By August of 2014 we have had to replace both the left and right lift link on the mower deck. Very poor quality and design. Took a long time to receive the broken parts ( especially in grass growing season!) Other than that frustration the mower has performed well.

POOR deck design

By

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 17-42:

I bought this unit 2yrs ago and the first time I used it the mandrel (pulley housing) on the left side broke on the second pass. I took it to Home Depot and they replaced it no questions asked. However the right side mandrel has now broken and dropped the blade. After taking a long look at the deck and the mandrels the deck is poorly designed. The mandrels should be mounted to the top of the deck like most other mowers with the blade shaft going thru the deck plate. Ariens design has the mandrels going completely thru the deck and bolting to the underside of the deck using 4 small tabs. If 1 bold breaks or comes out on its own the vibration will break the tabs and the mandrel drops to the ground.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 17-42:

This is my first riding mower. I got it at Home Depot over a year ago. The only change I made was to replace the original blades with mulching blades. It does a good job. Other than routine maintenance I have done nothing to it. It starts easily every time. Using the clutch smoothly takes a little practice. I took the blades off at the end of the season to sharpen them. Getting access to the blades was a little difficult. Overall I am very pleased with it.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 17-42:

I replaced my 12 yr old Murray with this beauty. Picked up the bagger and mulching blades as well. So far...no complaints...all +++s; turning radius, reverse, power, bagging or mulching. Sucks up leaves like a vacuum cleaner. If you have a smaller property..buy it..can't beat it for under a grand. My research paid off!

The mower it self is easy to use and for noise i have read reviews i s quite and i don't think it is that quite as i have bad hearing and i still wear ear plugs to mow as it is that loud for me. Over all it has been a good mower even thought we bought it as a reconditioned mower and could not get a warranty with it

I bought this mower not knowing much about it. (I usually research things to the max). It is suprisingly strong. I also purchased a bagger for the mower and was very surprised at how well it picked up the clippings and bagged them with great force. I would buy this mower again.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

i purchased this mower from Home Depot about a year ago. i was using it to mow and catch fox tails. i was towing a chipper/vac unit behind the tractor on the factory hitch. the transmission went out. i was told it was not meant to tow, even though in the manual it says you can tow if there is a hitch. needless to says they would not repair my transmission after one year on a 2 year warranty. not very happy with this company.

Not happy with it

By

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

We're not at all happy with this product. We bought it from Home Depot and have used it for two months now. The drive belt keeps coming loose, making it necessary to crawl under the tractor to slip it back into place. It's most inconvenient to need to stop the tractor to change speeds. It doesn't have a timer even though you're supposed change the oil every 25 hours –without a timer, how do you know how many hours you've run it, particularly when it's used to haul mulch so that you're continuously stopping and starting it. When I disengage the mower, the lever hits my right knee if I don't remember to move it out of the way. We had great difficulty in getting it out of the crate when it was delivered. And then, of course, we had to dispose of the crate somehow. In hindsight, we probably should have spent the extra money and bought a competitor's riding mower, even though I've been told that both the competitor's and Ariens riding mowers are made by Husqvarna.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

I bought new a 93604200 42" 20hp hydro tractor. From day one on a hard right turn the fender would catch. I tried adjusting the hood, it still rubbed. Finally a few days ago I Iooked at the tractor from the front. The right front wheel is 10 to 15 degrees out of alignment. So i thought I will try to adjust the drag link. The drag link is NOT ADUSTABLE. So I had to buy new drag links ($150). I also had an issue with hard starting for 2 years. I pushed the throttle all the way up. Had to resort to starting fluid. Finally I decided to get physical with the throttle and pushed it forward and hit it with a ball peen. Low and behold there was the choke. I have bought my last Ariens tractor. I have bought my last tractor at a big box store.

My old Toro rider put this Ariens to shame

By

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

I normally mulch leaves and grass all of the time. I purchased the mulching kit for this mower ($75) and it clumps and that is with the height setting at 10. If I set it to 9 or 8 have to re-cut the yard. If I lower the deck so that it touches the gound the height setting is at 4! Very difficult to cut grass when you must set the height to 10 and there is no higher setting, and this is cutting grass every 3 days. The engine is great and the mower is made well, just grass blows out of the sides all of the time and it does NOT mulch leaves well at all. I have the model 936065 from a dealer, not a big box store. Also the hour meter continues to run even with the engine turned off. I got the mower 1 year ago and cut grass about 32 hours last year and the meter says 370 hours.
I went to the dealer to trade to something else and he pretty much accused me of using it commercially with so many hours and would only give me $600. I am looking at a Husqvarna articulated mower.

Good, but could include more goodies

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

First of all let me say that I purchased this mower used and not brand new. It looked to be in very good condition, so I purchased it. I had no idea how many hours were on it, because it has no hour meter.
Pros:
- Lots more metal than plastic which is always nice.
- The Kohler motor seems to work great and has load of power.
Cons:
- No hour meter, really? I asked Ariens why my mower had no hour meter, they said to keep costs down for the consumer. I think it has more to do with profit than costs. I purchased an aftermarket meter for $30 and installed myself, but would have been nice if it was there from the factory.
- Only 2 deck wheels. Again, I think this is better than no deck wheels at all like some of theirs and other models, but to get a nice cut you need 4. Again, I purchased a set online and it was an easy install. Only cost me $25 and a half hour of labor.
- Turning this mower is a chore. Not sure what the problem is, but other mowers I have owned turned much easier.
- There is no good reason for having a hydrostatic transmission with a lever on your side, none. They should make all mowers with either a 6-7 speed or foot controls, period. My side lever is a chore to put into neutral and a pain to put into reverse. The slot that the lever is supposed to fit in does not work, "neutral" is somewhere in the forward position after lots of "giggling". Also I think given the right amount of gas I could pop a "wheely" if I was not careful!
Bottom line - In this age of plastic, I like that the mower is mostly metal, and this to me exudes durability to the consumer. I like that I have not busted any pulleys, belts, spindles, blades or anything else...BUT give me a bit more or the option for more even if you want to charge me for it! Your customer service seems pretty good, but at the end of the day I did not have any solution to my problem.

Purchased my 2008 42" tractor slightly used from a home owner in 2009.
I have mowed, towed and used this product since with no problems.
I have done the basic maintenance on it as required such as oil changes etc. My only issue as of today is the V Belt has stretched out and finally broke. Not bad for being 5 years old and used hard, the fun part was finding its replacement... of which I found it at a local Ariens parts dealer.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 20-42:

Great for just cutting grass. It was hard to start from day one, should have taken it back but kept it too long. After to starts it will start right back up with no problem.
Sometimes have to cut the grass twice because it failed to cut the first time.
However for the price and the free blades for life. it works just fine.

I used this mower for the first time and it cuts great. I live in a golf course community and it is remarkable. I purchased an aftermarket grass catcher and it works great. The key switch option so you can use reverse is cool as I have to mow around lots of flowers and raised gardens. I am impressed with the the total metal frame and metal hood (very little plastic). I have about an 1.5 acres both with hills and valleys and it cut it with easily.

I bought this lawn mower July 2011 from Home Depot. Mower looks great but when we tried to start it; it would not start. I did some trouble shooting and in the manuel it states to jump the battery and let it run for a while. The reason for this is because it has been sitting and could loose its' juice. Understandable!

When we went to use it again it did the samething. We contacted customer service and they told us to purchase a new battery and they will reimburse us and they did. Put the new battery in the machine; it starts right up. However the next time we go to use the machine we have to jump start the battery again. We thought maybe we left the light on, the key in the wrong position , etc. This time when we finished using the machine we check everything. We took the key out, all lights off, etc.

Low and behold the next time we go to use the machine we had to jump start the machine again. We are in the process of contacting the company because the machine should not have to be jump started before every use.

Other than this problem the machine cuts the grass very well. It runs great. I just want to not have to jump start it every time. :)

I've had the 46 inch for 5 years I've had to replace the wheel assembly twice it doesn't take much to get out of alignment. The attachment from the tie rod to the wheel axle is very easy to bend, my yard is hilly and I have lot's of turns. although it turns very tight if you to tight too much you will push it out of alignment and your looking at $300 repair bill.

Doesn't hold up on acre yard.

By

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 46:

Deck is weak. Poor design doesn't lend itself to flowing over rises and falls in the yard. It has an "afterthought" add on guide that's bolted to the grass exit area to try to help it flow better with the yard. This piece isn't durable and has broken on our unit. Difficult blade change access. Much harder to take off for cleaning and maintenance than others we've owned over the years.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 46:

This model worked great the first year. Second year, the blades started having issues cutting the grass and were having to go over it twice. Went ahead and replaced with new blades, but still has same issue. Leaves a line of grass that forces you to mow over it twice. NEXT, it started having problems starting. Would have to hit it with a little starting fluid (ether) to get it started, then it was fine and would restart, until the next time you go to use it. Now, it won't even start with starting fluid. Had to replace battery just before 2 years. Does not seem to be getting any spark. Have replaced spark plugs (2 of them - Champion RC12YC are the replacements) Will be loading it up and taking it to a repair shop. Guessing the coil packs that fire plugs died. Won't even sputter. Also the headlight bulbs burn out often. Rarely use them, but they die from vibration I guess. Like I said, was great the first year, so-so the second year, and now problems. I have read other forums saying the same problems.

My 46" Ariens mower is a lemon. It is a 2011 and has only been in service for 3 northern summers, or said another way less than 100 hours. The spindle was replaced because the blades were vibrating and hitting the mower deck. Now I have serious issues with the B&S engine. The engine now needs to be overhauled and rebuilt. Dont buy this product. My mower started these problems weeks after the 3 year warranty. Don't buy don't buy don't buy.

My Ariens 46 has the power to mow through ferns, small saplings, blueberry bushes, and anything else I find in the woods. Oh and it does a professional job on my yard too. The motor is powerful enough to chop up anything that goes under the deck and it has enough speed to traverse rough terrain/hills. I use mine like a brush hog at camp clearing ATV trails. Ergonomically it is a perfect fit for me, enabling me to hours of comfortable cutting.

Wish the mower deck could be raised higher than 4" (standard height for most mowers).

Better Quality than a John Deere

By

from Prairieville, LA.

Site Member

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 46:

I've had this for over a year now, and have to say the quality exceeds expectations. I've had 2 John Deeres (bought from John Deere dealers) over the years and while features are similar the reliability and dependability are not. The mower deck is one gauge less than the equivalent Deere but that has no impact on this tractor. This tractor starts the first time every time, and is still running on factory supplied (1st) battery. Both John Deere batteries went in the 1st yr. Big PLUS is the torque and speed. Faster than a Deere equal more Torque, and tight turn radius for a tractor.

I highly recommend any looking to replace or buying a lawn tractor to go with Ariens.

Nicest looking cut on the street.

By

from Inverary, Onario

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 46:

I believe the secret to its great performance is the two-blade design in lieu of 3, coupled with the predetermined throttle position. No clumps! It leaves a beautiful looking cut.
I also like the fuel tank under the hood instead of under the seat - the reason, fewer spills. The tank is up higher.
The steering is the best of the three lawn tractors I have owned. It is smooth and one hand on the wheel is sufficient to put it through its paces. I save a lot of time with this tractor because of the steering.
The only reason I didn't score it a 5 is that it's been in the shop 3 times in only 1 year. The problems were minor and the service was stellar, but I still lost time because of the failures.

It easlly compares to other high end name brand products and for me, will set the standard for other to be compared to.

Only complaint is the unit is a little loud. Mows very nicely. Got the rear bagger attachment and it works very well also. I really like that I don't have to press or pull any button to go in reverse with the mower blades engaged. Have had the mower for about 3weeks so no real sense of durability yet, but seems well built. Overall I really like the mower so far. I think this is a great mower for the money.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 48:

I recently took delivery from a Local Ariens dealer of a tractor with a 48" deck. They dropped the unit off and I found it where I asked them to place it after work. I wasn't able to fully test the mower that night so I did a quick test drive by driving the unit into my shed. The machined seem ok moving in forward an reverse. Come today July 4 I wanted to fully test out the machine gave the engine a start it came on fine. Next tried to go forward then reverse nothing. Shut the machine down checked to confirm the transmission was engaged, it was. Started the machine again, no drive as expected so I shut it down. Couldn't start the machine again battery already dead.

I have a call in to the dealer, it being the 4th and all I will have to wait. The issue from what I am reading on here is probably the drive belt, Just think not even an hour and not grass cut with this machine and it might have already thrown its main drive belt. Per the manual the mower deck will have to be removed to get at that one. Let hope the dealer will be taking care of that one.

Evidently some of the other owners of this model as I have some uneven spots in thier lawn. At times I have had to push it out of the dip too. The answer to that, is fill in the dips.(duh) The real answer is for Airens to put a floating deck on the mower insted of what we have. Also, larger diamiter rear wheels would help. Would I buy the same mower again? Probably, because
#1 The Kohler engine is the best on the market.
#2 You can not beat the price when on sale.
#3 The operating features are easy to use.
#4 Blades for life got my attention.
Thanks to Airens and Home Depot I have a good machine. Paul R. In Tennessee.

It has a lot of power and is very comfortable, but the deck hangs up on everything. I get a very uneven cut and gouges in the lawn because the deck bounces a lot when there are bumps in the lawn. The hight adjustment is pretty much useless. I have the choice of using settings 5 or 6 only because when it's on 1-4, the blades are on the ground and it can't be adjusted differently because then it would hit the frame above the deck. It would be a great lawn mower if the deck and hight adjustment was designed better.

Good Kohler engine, good turning radius

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 54:

This tractor is good for flat lawn cutting and not for a lawn with many trees or the slightest hills or rough spots. The tractor easily gets stuck and you literally have to get off the machine and push it. Performs even worse if the grass is even slightly damp on the smallest little incline. Very frustrating! Positives are a powerful Kohler engine and tight turning radius. In the end I traded it for a JD.

Had mower for three years now and has held up beautifully. Free blades for life has always come when ordered and once sent the wrong blades and I called and they had the right ones sent out to me ASAP. Would buy again and also bought front tine tiller and it has been great.

well i got in on the free blades deal and i must say nice. but when i bought the mulch kit the tractor turned into a grass eating machine.if you dont have the mulch kit you dont know what your lawn could look like.you can see the differance now I realllllllllly love my tractor. actually my grandkids love this tractor more than i do every weekend we drive the tractor to town for a treat then to the park and back.

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 54:

I bought this tractor 3 years ago and it has proven to be reliable. It mows a nice wide path so mowing takes less time. I also like be able to ride in reverse and keep the blades in motion. The wheels on the deck could be better, but they function. Great buy, plus I get a free set of blades a year for life!

It stinks!!!!

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 54:

My 54" has rear wheels that are too small and the traction is very poor. It was slapped together because the cutting level cannot be raised above "5" because the cutter hits the frame. This was a very poorly designed tractor, so I still use my 15 year old Murray 46" most of the time. I let the kids ride the 54", but only on level land because on slight grades the tires slip - It's junk!!! I hate it - A waste of money.

Best price for the power of any lawn tractor with a very...

Comments about Ariens Lawn Tractor 54:

Great tractor for my full city block yawd. The short turning ability and the 8 MPH speed make my yard work much easier. It will work in tight places for it size very well. The cons are the reverse is weak and can strand you because the tractor weight is 800 # - take care driving on sloped grounds. The free new cutting blades per year for life will save me a lot of cash over the years. I have had this mower for three years with air filter, lub, oil, and fuel is the only cost to me thus far. Buy it at Home Depot late in the season or the season after and save big dollars.
