I have owned mine for 7 or 8 years and it is all I use on my 2 acres. I would recommended this machine to anyone who let's there grass grow tall. Mine is fantastic. I broke it in properly and change the oil regularly. As a wildlife enthusiast I like to let my grass and wild flowers go to seed. That means I mow tall thick grass and brush three or four times a year. I brag about my machine every time not only does it do the work without complaint but it also fires right up every time usually on the first pull. I have replaced the pull cord twice, the air filter only once since I clean it regularly, and I took off the float bowl from the carb to dry out a couple drops of water once. I think I have worn out about an eighth of a mile of string line. I have never known anyone who was as happy with a mower as I am with mine. Thank you Ariens

I ordered this trimmer from an on-line third party retailer because my local equipment dealer for Ariens equipment does not sell this type of machine. Though not a fault of Ariens or possibly the seller, the unit arrived with a damaged gas cap but since this involved an internal flange on the cap, it was not observed until I had accepted the shipment and begun to service it. I found that one of the flanges on the underside of the plastic gas tank cap had broken off and fractured into many small particles deposited into the tank. I discovered this prior to adding gas and was able to vacuum them out of the tank and use the trimmer since the cap is still functional when missing one flange. I called the seller about this who suggested I work with my local dealer about obtaining a replacement (at my own expense). I also checked the Ariens on-line parts site for it but found it was back ordered so I decided to proceed without replacing it. In my opinion, a more robust material should be used for this part. In use, the machine operated fairly well on even, flat ground but for heavy grass on a moderately steep hillside (my main usage), it was nearly useless and quite unmaneuverable since it is moderately heavy and not self propelled. I accept some responsibility in this case for choosing the "improper" tool for the job although I feel this should be emphasized in Ariens' description of the unit. I also found that the head pivoting feature tends to slip while in use unless the fixing bolt is extremely tight. This is very annoying. I therefore find myself with a relatively pricey trimmer for which I have minimal use. Under less demanding conditions, it would probably be very acceptable.

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I bought this last year and it arrived with the engine siezed. I called and was told to take it to service center with no offer of exchange or return available. I took it in and 4 weeks later I get it back. To date I have been unable to get 1 days total use out the thing. It takes forever to get started and once it does DONT SHUT IT OFF! It will not start again. Usually about 1/2 way through my project it dies, will not start again for several hours and then dies periodically the rest of the day with several hours being forced between usage! I have never been able to get all the way around my fence in a single day. I use my straight bar hand held trimmer and finish in about an hour but this slab of garbage will not stay running long enough for me to finish in an entire day! Worst purchase I have ever made!

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I've been wanting one for a long time and when this one came up, a refurbished end of the season unit, and the price was great. I snapped it up. It takes a little getting used to as does everything that is a bit different. I mow everything that I can't get with my rider with this and trim as I go.. (Had an Ariens rider for about 15 years before I broke an axel gear-pulling a small stump. Not really made for that as it was a small 12HP. We live in sand/rock country so this is the way to go as my bladed mower gets dull quickly from all of the rocks I hit trying to trim close. (My wife edges her flower beds with rocks.) With Ariens you pay a little more but outlasts the cheap imported china junk. Back to specifics, after a long winter and a few pumps of the primer she started right up. Typical one-pull starting all season. Simple to maintain as well as uses an easy starting Briggs and Straton Engine-great power for this unit. Get good string as the cheap stuff uses up quicker. As almost allways-YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! OR YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET.

Difficult on rough terrain.

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

Overall I am pleased with the Ariens string trimmer. My main problem is that it is difficult to maneuver on rough terrain. Compared to prices of other brands and models, I paid a premium for the 14 inch wheels. If I could make one change it would be larger wheels which allow easier maneuvering on rough ground.

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I love doing yard work and using the Ariens string trimmer is a back saver. I've had 3 surgeries on my neck in the last 10 years and this help me so much. Using a regular string trimmer would keep down for days from neck pain. I have over an acre and I have no touble doing it now. This works GREAT. Thanks

Very happy with string trimmer

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I have my Ariens string trimmer now for about a year. Did lots of research before buying. Looked at various competitors but none had the value and features of the Ariens. Some of the other similars just looked cheaper built and ultimately decided to with Ariens because of the name and reputation.

My one and only gripe would be that the bolt holding each wheel has bent slightly causing the wheels to tilt inwards which doesn't allow for a full 15 degrees on the pivoting head. Will go back to vendor to see if there's any updated part.

The unit has plenty of power, when I first got it the weeds were quite tall and thick, it made easy work of them.

Ariens, 22" string trimer

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I bought this machine because I did not want to pay what DP wanted for their machine as I did not think the value was there. Turns out that I made a great choice! This machine is really well built...runs and starts very well. I am very impressed with the ease of starting as it usually starts on the first pull and certainly starts on the second pull.

The ONLY thing I would change in the design would be the engine air cooling shroud. I noticed that the times I used the machine that the wholes in the engine cooling shroud (top within the circle) air intake would look like it was plugging up with chafe from the weeds and could possibly interfere with the cooling ability. I'm not saying the engine was getting hot but did not like the plugging up of the holes as this was about 70% plugged or appeared as 70%.

I put together a pre-filter utilizing the three bolts already existing in the top of the shroud which works very nicely since I fastened the filter material with wing nuts it is easy to remove and slap clean. My wife thinks I'm nuts

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

I have owned my trimmer/mower for approximately 10 years. I use it so much in rocky and ruff ground it wears out the part that spins on the ground. I have no complaints with this. It could be improved by using wider wheels with steel spokes. The plastic spoke wheels warp when you mow across a hill. This makes pushing the mower twice as hard. I had an old mower with 12" steel spoke wheels that I replaced the plastic wheels until the replacement rubber wore off. Now I have worn the rubber off the orginal wheels. A wheel and a hub cost $35 each.

Great for yard with lots of exposed rocks.

Comments about Ariens String Trimmer:

We have used this trimmer on our acre lot for two seasons. Starts easy, the line is a snap to change and has lots of power for high Texas hill country weeds. The large wheels help to manuver it on uneven terrain since I am not a large person. The guard is great to keep rocks from being thrown against windows or my husband. It is a little pricey but worth every penny. The only improvement I would like to see is an easier method to change the oil.
