I have owned a lot of edgers. Mostly those that attach to a string trimmer. But I have also had one of the lighter weight walk behinds. Well, those aren't bad, but they die in about a year or two. And hit something with them? Time to buy a new one. The Ariens edger is an edger period. No attachments. It is heavy duty and designed to do one job...edge. And it does that job exeedingly well. It starts easily, and runs like a watch. When you are edging all you do is walk behind it and the machine does the work, not you! Edging is effortless. The results are fantastic. And it "sips" gas.

Is this edger more expensive than the light weights? Sure. But like anything else, you get what you pay for. And what you get here is a quality "Wisconsin built" product that does the job!

We ordered three of these units from Grainger before we finally received one that was not damaged. With the front wheel adjusted all the way to the left the left edge of the wheel barely rides at the drop off of the curb making it to where you have to fight the unit the entire time to keep it up on the curb and it just eats blades. The first two units we received that were damaged had the cutter head assembly so loose and wobbly that it would just flop back and forth 4 to 6 inches. It appears to be a bad design. The local Ariens repair shop claimed they were damaged in shipment, and wanted us to have bought one from their shop. We have another location that has one of these units as well and it is almost a year older than ours and over time the cutter head on theirs has gotten loose and they have kind of guild-wired the head off with plastic zip ties to hold the head steady. and those are replaced on a regular basis. I work for a Government agency and we are restricted as to what we can purchase. This was the only edger on our catalogue. and it is the worst edger I have ever operated. I have used at least 3 other brands and I didn't know you could mess up an edger. also the adjustment that you have to unscrew every time to drop the back wheel for edging curbs is a pain, and ours is also sprung out where it doesn't line up in the holes in both tracks which drives that wheel at a bit of an angle too. The engine is impressive but the edger is junk.

The product is great but has engineering and quality...

Comments about Ariens Edger:

I purchased the model 986103 with the Subaru engine. This engine is great. My quality problems were with the elevation pivot and the tilt pivot. Both were loose and and the cutting head vibrated excessively. The screws were secure and tight. The elevation pivot had A 1/8" gap between the guard and the chassis. The belleville spring washers were nested but after turning one a 1/16" gap remained and needed to be filled with an additional flat washer. The tilt pivot was loose because the Y of the tilt lever was 1/16" too narrow. A washer was added. Surely US manufacturing can do better than to expect quality control at the service dealer or owner.

The main engineering problem is with high curbs. The curb wheel cannot be lowered enough for 6" to 8" curbs so the machine is very tilted and if the blade is worn it will not edge properly. This might be easily remedied by adding a 2nd lower screw hole in bracket #29.

This edger has all around great quality and the engine is very powerful and is easy on the gasoline. The edger is easy to operate and leaves the lawn with a crisp clean cut and makes your yard look terrific.

Starts easy, angled blade feature is useful

Comments about Ariens Edger:

I ordered from an internet company, since I have no local dealer that stocks these devices. I assembled the unit in less than an hour, then added oil and gasoline. The engine started on the first pull. I especially enjoy the feature that allows the blade to be angled in either direction.
I use it to edge along a blacktop driveway, next to a concrete walk, and around our landscape beds. It performs well on all three. I would definitely purchase this unit again.

Nice machine....when it works!

Comments about Ariens Edger:

I have owned the Ariens edger for one year and I am satisfied with the overall performance, but it has already been in the repair shop twice. When the edger was initially delivered, the fuel safety valve was stuck in the on position, so it had to be brought to a local repair shop. This spring, when I tried to start the unit, it would not run. Turns out that the spark plug wire had detached from the connector socket, so another trip to the repair shop. Ariens customer service has been excellent and both repairs were covered under the warrantee, but transporting the unit in my auto was difficult at best and resulted in a strained back both times!

Comments about Ariens Edger:

I just purchased this edger and used it for the first time. I gave my son my old Craftsman which I THOUGHT worked well. Well I never new what I was missing until I purchased this machine. It worked GREAT!!!
I will try the curb edger tonight but it looks pretty simple and straight forward. I do wish it had a throttle control on the handle but, then again, I always leave it at full power when using it anyway. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

If you are tired of the cheap edgers that don't hold up,...

Comments about Ariens Edger:

Starts on the 1st or 2nd pull every time. The Subaru engine has plenty of power and the rear wheels adjust for unlevel operation (like a slanted curb).
I would like the rear wheel adjustment to be easier, but that is my only complaint. Usually sells for about $300. but is well worth it. I seriously doubt that I will have to buy a replacement for this edger for many years.
